Alleppey
(Alappuzha)
Often compared to Venice because of its narrow picturesque waterways, Allapuzha (Alleppey) is one of the most picturesque locations anywhere in the world. The palm fringed criss crossing canals, lakes and waterways, whose shores offer you glimpses of people whose lives are shaped by the water, together with its long sandy beach make Alleppey one of the best backwater areas in Kerala. The Backwaters of Alleppey can be best experienced in the traditional ‘ketuvalloms’ or houseboats which are a highlight in Kerala.

The coir and carpet industry are also very prominent in Alleppey. Snake boat races are the most significant traditional event in Alleppey. These spectacular regattas are usually held between August and October and involve long boats powered by up to 120 oarsmen.

Plac es of Interest in and around Alleppey:

Alappuzha Beach:
Alappuzha Beach is one of the most popular spots in the district of Alappuzha. The pier, which extends into the sea here, is around 140-years-old.

The Krishnapuram Palace, located 47 kms from Alappuzha en-route to Kollam, was built by Marthanda Varma in the 18th century. This palace bears the stamp of Kerala’s unique architectural opulence. It also houses Kerala’s largest mural panels. A museum of antique bronze sculptures and paintings is another attraction.

Mannarshala Temple:
Mannarshala covers an area of 16 acres of dense green forest grove devoted to serpent worship. The temple here is unique in that the holy rites are presided over by a priestess. The temple is reputed for having 30,000 images of snake-gods and is the largest of its kind in the state.
