Trichur, also known as the cultural capital of Kerala, is steeped in history, cultural heritage and archaeological
wealth. Many rulers and dynasties including the Europeans, the Dutch and the British have had a hand in
moulding the destiny of the region. The great ruler, Raja Ravi Varma, also known as ‘Sakthan Thamburan’,
is known as the architect of modern day Trichur town. It is best known for its extravagant and world famous
festival, the ‘Thrissur Pooram’, which is attended by hundreds of thousands each year. It is also home to some
of the most famous cultural, dance and art centers in Kerala. The Guruvayoor temple, one of the most soughtafter
Krishna temples in Kerala, is also located in Trichur. |

 Places of Interest in and around Trichur:
Guruvayoor:
One of the most sacred and important pilgrim centres in Kerala, its main attraction is the Sree Krishna Temple. Only Hindus are allowed entry into the temple. However a walk around the premises is still very inspiring.
Athirappally and Vazhachal Waterfalls:
A shimmering expanse of tranquil beauty, the Athirapally is a breathtaking waterfall which is about 80 feet high. Vazhachal, which is another water fall about 5 kms from the Athirapally, is yet another attraction.
Punnathoor Kotta:
The palace ground of the erstwhile kings of Punnathoor, it houses an elephant camp with more than 60 elephants and is said to be the only one of its kind anywhere in the world.
Kerala Kalamandalam:
Founded in 1930 by Mahakavi Vallathol, a legendary poet from Kerala, its main objective is to revive, preserve and develop the ancient and traditional art forms of
Kerala. Visitors can also spend a day with the masters to witness artists and teachers in action. It is located on the banks of the Bharathapuzha River which has been a source of inspiration for some of the greatest works of literature and poetry to have originated in Kerala.
Nattika Beach:
Located about 30 kms from Trichur, this is a relatively undiscovered beach offering miles of palm-fringed golden sands and picturesque surroundings.
