Volunteering Projects
Kerala offers those who are seeking to engage in meaningful travel the opportunity to stay and explore this stunning land while at the same time engaging in voluntary projects that benefit society.
For the uninitiated, Kerala is a state that boasts the highest human development index in India. The entire population is literate and the quality of life is higher than anywhere else in the country. Considered to be a model state, the states economy is driven largely by tourism. Being a responsible tour company that strongly believes in ‘giving back’ to society, we are convinced that it is the travellers who are seeking and finding this new destination who can make a real difference by contributing in

their own ways to further social development. Travellers who book one of our many tours and holidays in Kerala contribute indirectly to society by way of our responsible tourism initiative, whereby part of the profits from every booking is donated to human development projects.

For those interested in taking part in more dedicated voluntary projects while exploring Kerala, here are a few options:

1. Teaching English: In Kerala the meduim of instruction in schools is generally English and Malayalam (the local language).Towards the cities and urban areas, students generally tend to attend English medium schools since it helps in higher education and in securing jobs anywhere in the country. The lower middle class and the rural population however send children to Malayalam medium schools where the focus on English is not as high. Travellers interested in imparting English education training could engage in providing English language training to students of all age groups. This could involve teaching for a few hours a day. Local self-help groups which are supported by the government would be happy to join and support you in any such venture.
2. Working in Rural Clinics: Those who are certified medical professionals and are interested in getting involved in voluntary projects can work in private rural clinics and provide healthcare to the rural populace.

3. Working with Orpahanges: You could get involved in working with children in orphanages and contribute to the day-to-day workings in your own special way.

4. Working with Farmers: Kerala is a tropical land and was largely an agricultural community in years gone by. Agriculture is no longer the main focus and large portions of farms and agricultural land remain unutilised. You could volunteer to work with farmers, providing not only economic benefits to the farmers but also raising general awareness of farming and agriculture.

Volunteering projects obviously require longer periods of stay so as to make a substantial difference to society. We recommend a minimum stay of a month for travellers wanting to engage in volunteering projects. Accommodation is organised with local families so that you get to experience the essence of real rural Kerala. For more details on volunteering projects contact one of our Kerala experts.
