Once the capital of the powerful Zamorin rulers of North Kerala and a prominent trade and commerce centre, Calicut was the most important region in Kerala in ancient times. Malappuram literally means ‘a land atop the hills’ and is situated 50 kms southeast of Kozhikode. Bounded by the Niligiri Hills on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west, Malappuram is enriched by three great rivers flowing through it - the Chaliyar, Kadalundi and the Bharathapuzha. Once the military headquarters of the Zamorins who ruled the Malabar region, this district has been the venue of many an uprising.

Idukki derives its name from the Malayalam word ‘idukku’ which means a narrow gorge. High ranges and wooded valleys girded by three main rivers span a landmass that covers almost 13 per cent of the state, making it the largest district in Kerala. The town’s name is a combination of two Malayalam words ‘Pathanam’ and ‘Thitta’, which together mean “houses by the riverside”. Pathanamthitta is a fast-developing town and business centre. Three great rivers, the Pamba, Achankovil and Manimala, undulate through this district.

Located on the west coast and near the extreme south of the state, Thiruvananthapuram, otherwise known as Trivandrum, is the capital of Kerala. For the uninitiated, the name actually comes from (thiru-anantha-puram) where ‘anantha’ refers to the idol of the giant serpent ‘Ananda’ on which the idol of the Hindu God Vishnu rests and ‘puram’ means abode (translating into abode of ‘ananda’).
